Video Poker Guide
Since its creation in the 1970s, Video Poker has become one of the most popular casino games in the world. Blending strategy, the excitement of poker, fast slots play and some of the best house odds found in casinos, video poker can be a rewarding and potentially lucrative pursuit.
Video Poker Origins
It can be argued that the first slot machines invented were in essence the prototypes for the video poker games being played today. In 1891 the company Sittman and Pitt designed and marketed the first ever slot machine, comprising five drums holding 50 face cards.
Players would insert a coin to spin the drums, and would receive a pay out if the alignment of face cards on the drums resulted in a winning poker hand. As these machines developed other symbols replaced the face cards, eventually giving rise to slot machines as we know them today.
In the late 1970s the idea of a poker based slot machine was revived as computer technology made it possible to design a poker game that could be played and displayed on a computer monitor. This innovation produced the first video poker games.
Video Poker Formats
As computer technology has evolved, so have the graphics, playability and diversity of modern video poker games. At present up to a dozen video poker formats are offered by top online casinos like William Hill, all of which are profiled on this site.
While the principles of poker which provide the foundation for each of the video poker formats remain unchanged, variations in the formats are found in the odds paid out on different hands by each format which are, in turn, determined by the house odds programmed into each format.
